How to Unlock Fragments of Orbis in Hytale

So you've been wandering around Orbis, building your base, and wondering what that cryptic "Ancient Gateway" recipe is all about. Good news - it's one of Hytale's best features, and unlocking it is more straightforward than you'd think.

Fragments of Orbis are temporary dimensions you can travel to through the Ancient Gateway. Each one is procedurally generated, packed with unique enemies and loot, and operates on a timer. Think of them as timed dungeon runs you can do from the comfort of your home base.

Here's how to get access to them.

Getting Your First 100 Memories

The Ancient Gateway recipe unlocks once you've recorded 100 Memories at the Forgotten Temple. If you haven't been there yet, open your map and look for the cross-shaped structure with a swirling portal icon - every world seed has one, though the location varies.

Before you head there, craft yourself a Crude Sword. The temple has a few enemies inside, and you don't want to be punching skeletons with your bare hands.

Once inside, head down to the basement and go through the blue portal. You'll find yourself in the Forgotten Temple proper, where the Heart of Orbis altar sits. This is where you'll deposit your Memories.

Here's the thing - Memories are basically a creature log. Every time you see a new creature in Hytale, you get a Memory of it. Check your inventory and click the diamond icon below the crafting button to see what you've collected. But they don't count until you submit them at the altar.

The good news? 100 Memories is easier than it sounds. Just explore different biomes, look at every creature you encounter, and return to the temple periodically to bank your progress. You'll hit the milestone faster than you'd expect.

Crafting the Arcanist's Workbench

You can't craft the Ancient Gateway at a normal Workbench. You need the Arcanist's Workbench first, which requires upgrading your standard Workbench to Tier 2.

For the Tier 2 upgrade, you'll need:

  • 30 Copper Ingots (smelt Copper Ore from Emerald Grove caves)

  • 20 Iron Ingots (found deeper in caves)

  • 20 Linen Scraps (dropped by humanoid enemies)

Once your Workbench hits Tier 2, the Arcanist's Workbench recipe becomes available. For that, gather:

  • 10 Thorium Ingots (mined in the Howling Sands biome)

  • 30 Linen Scraps

  • 20 Essence of the Void (from Void enemies or Void Breaches)

Building the Ancient Gateway

With your Arcanist's Workbench ready and 100 Memories submitted, you can finally craft the gateway itself. You'll need:

  • Cobblestone

  • Thorium

  • Essence of Life

  • Essence of the Void

Place it somewhere convenient in your base. I stuck mine near my main workbench area - you'll be using it regularly once you get a taste for dimension hopping.

The Three Dimensions

Each dimension requires a specific Fragment to open a portal. You craft these at the Arcanist's Workbench too.

Windrider Valley

Fragment cost: 10 Thorium Ingots + 30 Essence of Life

Time limit: 6 minutes

This is probably your first stop. Windrider Valley is all high peaks and mountain terrain, perfect for fast traversal if you're comfortable with the movement system. You'll find villages, loot, and enemies scattered throughout. Occasionally there's a mage tower to explore.

The six-minute timer feels short at first, but you get used to the rhythm. Grab what you can, fight what you need to, and the portal spits you back home when time runs out.

Dragonspire Weald

Fragment cost: 10 Cobalt Ingots + 30 Essence of Ice

Time limit: 7 minutes

This one's more dangerous. Massive mountains, redwood forests, and enemies that don't care whether it's day or night. The caves here are worth exploring if you need iron, though watch out for the snakes.

The big draw? There's a sleeping Frost Dragon in a marked ice circle. You can't interact with it yet - it's clearly a work in progress - but it's quite the sight. Future updates will almost certainly let you fight or ride it.

The Dread Wade

Fragment cost: 10 Adamantite Ingots + 30 Essence of Fire

Time limit: 7 minutes

The endgame dimension. You'll need Adamantite gear to survive here comfortably, and getting Adamantite requires venturing into the Devastated Lands (Zone 4) first.

The Dread Wade is volcanic and hostile. Fire-themed enemies are immune to fire damage (though they still catch fire visually, which is a nice touch). Come prepared with good armour and plenty of food.

Tips for Dimension Runs

Craft multiple Fragments beforehand. Each portal trip consumes one Fragment. If you're planning a farming session, batch-craft them so you're not running back to the workbench constantly.

The worlds regenerate. Every time you use a new Fragment, you get a fresh procedurally generated layout. This means infinite farming potential if you're after specific resources or loot.

Bring friends. These runs work well in co-op. Split up, cover more ground, and call out good loot when you find it.

Don't panic when the timer ends. You're teleported back safely with everything you collected. No risk of losing your stuff.

Use them as gear checks. Struggling in Dragonspire Weald? Your gear probably isn't up to scratch. The dimensions scale in difficulty, so they're useful benchmarks for your progression.

What's Next?

The Fragment system is clearly designed to expand. With Adventure Mode and official minigames still on the roadmap, expect more dimensions and longer runs in future updates. The sleeping Frost Dragon in Dragonspire Weald is basically a signpost saying "boss fight coming eventually."

For now, the three available dimensions offer a solid endgame loop. Farm resources, grab unique loot, and enjoy the variety of procedurally generated content without straying too far from home.
